Comments on: In registration, there is always a silver lining http://narrowcampus.com/2008/10/30/in-registration-there-is-always-a-silver-lining/ The skinny on college life in Boston, from Babcock Street to Kenmore square... and beyond. This blog feels like a desperate attempt to make COM "current" (a word I hear whispered a lot around these halls lately) because blogging is somehow perceived as "hip". But guess what? Every loser on the internet has one, and most are about as pointless as a lot of what we're seeing here. Like DJ said, it's not that this stuff is BAD, it's that posting this on a COM blog is just somewhat at odds with what we should be seeing here. What about discussion of new media concepts and technologies? What about independent film reviews? What about discussion of the curriculum and how it can be changed to benefit the students? SO many topics that are all but screaming to be discussed, but instead...stuff better left to the DFP. Seriously, nice try, but we might as well have a COM MySpace page, if this is some scrambling attempt to make COM "cool". At the risk of sounding over-critical, if this is one more facet of the "face-lift" COM is getting under the leadership of the new Dean, along with the landscaping and other "prettying-up" of the building (which is sad - have you seen the exterior paintjob lately?), I think priorities for this college are pointing in the wrong direction. A strong, revised curriculum backed by faculty professionally trained in mew multimedia technologies (rather than "learning with the students" as I hear a lot in class) is what's needed - not a blog. Don't get me wrong, I find this entry entertaining and true. It is not, however, something I want to see associated in any way with my institution--send this to the Daily Free Press if you must, but keep it off of COM's home page.
